A committed pacifist and one of the last living torchbearers of the Frankfurt School's neo-Marxist cultural criticism, Kluge's artistic contributions spanned both screen and page. Early in his career, he gained invaluable experience as an assistant to the legendary expressionist master Fritz Lang, before establishing his own distinguished path as a director and a consistently productive writer of short fiction.
