Review: "Portrait of a City" Captures the American Urban Experience
The Dulwich Picture Gallery presents "Portrait of a City," an exhibition that delves into the evolution of the American urban landscape and the development of photographic language through the works of seminal 20th-century photographers. This is only the second photography exhibition in the gallery's history.
The exhibition offers a concise yet powerful overview, focusing exclusively on American cityscapes from prominent photographers of the era. It begins with the pictorialist pioneers of New York, Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen. The show then progresses through a series of masterpieces, highlighting early examples of social documentary photography. Notable inclusions are Dorothea Lange's iconic "Migrant Mother" and "White Angel Breadline," alongside Lewis Hine's emblematic portrait of Victor “Frenchy” Gosselin, a high-steel ironworker, captured during the construction of the Empire State Building.
The exhibition masterfully showcases the urban environment in its multifaceted reality, from the shadows of midnight crime scenes to the atmospheric depths of gloomy corridors, presenting the city in all its grime, grit, and glory.
